Jamaica was on the brink of criminal explosion — ASSISTANT Commissioner of police Leon Rose testified during the Tivoli Enquiry yesterday that, had the police not acted the way it did in May 2010, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke would have been the unelected president of Jamaica today.

Rose, who was responding to questions from Peter Champagnie (attorney for the Jamaica Defence Force), said that Jamaica was on the "brink of criminal explosion".
He said that Coke, who was called 'Presie' (short for president) , would have moved from a "perceived president" to an "unelected one" .
Rose said that, in his 40 years within the force, he had never seen anything like the events that led up to the police going into Tivoli Gardens to apprehend Coke, who was wanted in the United States on gun and drug-running charges.
He said he had worked in the "turbulent period of 1976 when a state of emergency was called, and the 1980s when some 30 police officers were killed per year, but that none of those events compared to the level of co-ordinated attacks on the police and criminal defiance he saw leading up to the day the police launched its operation on May 24, 2010 to apprehend Coke.
Earlier, Rose told the Tivoli Commission of Enquiry that criminal elements related to Coke mounted roadblocks across the Corporate Area and St Catherine to prevent movement of the police.
He said the roadblocks worked in preventing the free movement of the officers.
The ACP explained that the Mobile Reserve's resources were stretched thin with the various outbreaks of violence across the Corporate Area, St Catherine and sections of St James. more

The bodies of 28-year-old Pagiet Davie and her common-law partner, Sheldon Douse, were found at their Fairview Park home with gunshot wounds in the morning. Police theorised that Douse killed Davie in her sleep before turning the gun on himself. They leave behind a three-year-old son. The incident left relatives, friends and colleagues of the slain cop in shock. "All now I cannot believe that something like this happen. All now I feel as if I am dreaming. This can't be real!" exclaimed on unidentified family member who was on the scene.
