Thursday, November 26, 2015     TWENTY-FIVE Jamaicans have been awarded scholarships valued at more than $100 million to study in Russia by aluminium conglomerate UC Rusal, which owns the Alpart and Windalco bauxite companies. The fully funded scholarships are valid for up to six years, and the students will pursue studies in chemical, mining, electrical, instrumental, and mechanical engineering. Awardees are from the Alpart and Windalco-operating areas, and they were selected through a competitive process, which included essay writing. The awards add to the five engineering scholarships granted by Windalco in 2012 for Jamaican students to study in Russia. Turkish presidential sources said the warplane was a Russian-made SU-24. The Turkish military, which did not confirm the plane's origin, said it had been warned 10 times in the space of five minutes about violating Turkish airspace. Laquan McDonald Emanuel called in community leaders and pastors for meetings on Monday aimed at preparing for public reaction to the video. The footage from a patrol car dashboard camera is being released as a result of a judicial order stemming from a lawsuit brought by a freelance journalist. Friday, November 20, 2015     Thirty-five years after performing at the first Independence Day celebrations of Zimbabwe, Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley will be posthumously honoured at the annual Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA) on a date to be announced. According to the website www.chronicle.co.zw, Marley will be bestowed a Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob Marley ZIMA Chairman Joseph Nyadzayo said the award is in tribute to Marley, years after he performed at the flag-raising ceremony in 1980. "We're honouring him for giving the de facto anthem and for leading the reggae music revolution in our free nation which as influenced important music types such as our own Zimdancehall phenomenon," he was quoted as saying. Rosalvo Patterson The ailing Patterson, who was blind, sparked national discussion about the treatment of the island’s poor seniors after his abject living conditions in Jericho, St Catherine, were featured in a front-page story in the Jamaica Observer edition of March 19. Patterson had been living in a dilapidated fowl coop for five years and was only getting by through the kindness of neighbours. On the day the story was published, music producer Wayne ‘Lonesome’ Brown rushed to his aid, paying for much-needed medical checkups and building him a onebedroom wooden house, complete with a bathroom and furniture. Producer Orville Matherson confirmed the date for what he says will be an "amazing event". Thursday, November 19, 2015   -- Richard Johnson     DANCEHALL deejay Dexta Daps was yesterday freed of all criminal charges relating to a scuffle with the police in April at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James. Dexta Daps The artiste, whose given name is Louis Grandison, appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court. He was charged with obstructing the police; use of indecent language; resisting arrest; and assault occasioning bodily harm. The deejay was represented by attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie. "Having gone through the statements of both Daps and his driver (Essan Richards), I suggested that it would suit the prosecution to have the matter go to mediation, and urged that good sense prevail in the matter," Champagnie told Jamaica Observer yesterday. Miss Jamaica World Sanneta Myrie Various individuals, purporting to be Myrie's friends, have accused Butler of doing very little in preparing the queen, who left for China on Tuesday ahead of the December 19 finals. Fifty-seven-year-old Joseph Lynch, 43-year-old Lascelles Lynch, Ruth Lawrence, and seven-year-old Rimeka Haynes went missing on Saturday after fire razed their six-apartment dwelling in the quiet community. Residents said that Joseph, a farmer, lived at the premises while the others were merely visiting. Residents said the fire, which also destroyed two other buildings on the premises, was detected at about 3:00 am Saturday. Seven-year-old Rimeka Haynes is among the missing four. Residents were asked to stay indoors.  Police said multiple suspects related to the Paris attacks were holed up in the apartment, including Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged mastermind,  AFP reports .  Salah Abdeslam , whom authorities have been hunting for since Saturday, is also believed to be inside the apartment.
