However, she told the press that she would check on it as soon as she got home. Simpson Miller was speaking to journalists following her foundation’s presentation of $4 million in scholarships and bursaries to 42 students at The Courtleigh Hotel in New Kingston. SIMPSON MILLER... Published:  Aug 29, 2016 6:09 p.m. ET The GOP is traditionally known as the party of Wall Street, but this year investors, for the most part, are betting against the Republican standard-bearer. The stock market is predicting Hillary Clinton to win in a landslide . “The market appears to have decided not only that [Hillary] Clinton will win, but that it won’t be close,” David Woo, a strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, said in a report distributed Monday. “Investors like landslide victories.” Woo noted that the S&P 500 has risen more than 4% since July 5, which marks the beginning of the 90-trading-day countdown to the election on Nov. 8. During years when presidential candidates won by a margin of more than 80% of Electoral College votes, the S&P 500 posted average returns of 8.4% in the 90 days leading up to the election, as this chart illustrates:  The last time stocks outperformed the current rally at the halfway point was when Ronald Reagan won in a lan

DEATH IN A CAVE (St. Catherine, Jamaica) : Search for water leaves three farmers dead....48-year-old Richard King, 36-year-old McGray Sergon, and Alfred Succan, believed to be about 36,

BY TANESHA MUNDLE Observer staff reporter mundlet@jamaicaobserver.com  Wednesday, August 03, 2016   It wasn’t a daily chore. But occasionally the three St Catherine farmers whose bodies were pulled from a cave in Dunbeholden yesterday would go there to get water for their crops. Last Friday, 48-year-old Richard King, 36-year-old McGray Sergon, and Alfred Succan, believed to be about 36, died during that quest for the precious resource. According to family members, the men died after inhaling toxic fumes from a pump they were using to fetch the water. A fourth farmer, whose identity the  Jamaica Observer   did not ascertain, escaped the tragedy and was taken to Spanish Town Hospital where he is being treated. On Monday, police reported that they had launched a search and rescue operation for the men who, they said, were trapped in the cave after they got into difficulties. MONTEGO BAY, St James : Tropical Storm Earl's rain floods MoBay

Image
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Earl yesterday caused severe flooding in sections of the resort city of Montego Bay. Among the areas affected were the newly developed Fairview Shopping Centre, where a number of motor vehicles were observed submerged in rising flood water. Sections of St James Street, Dome Street and Rosemount were also flooded, which caused a slowdown in commercial activities. Mayor of Montego Bay Councillor Glendon Harris attributed most of the flooding that affected the city, especially on Dome Street, to the clogging of silt traps by garbage. " The garbage [has been] blocking silt traps, therefore the water can’t run off as it is supposed to, so you get a build-up (of flood water) with the persistent, heavy rain,” Harris said. Officers from the parish council, he said, went into the town after the rain to determine work that needs to be done to prevent further flooding.
