MONTEGO BAY, St James : Tropical Storm Earl's rain floods MoBay

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Earl yesterday caused severe flooding in sections of the resort city of Montego Bay.
01Among the areas affected were the newly developed Fairview Shopping Centre, where a number of motor vehicles were observed submerged in rising flood water.
Sections of St James Street, Dome Street and Rosemount were also flooded, which caused a slowdown in commercial activities.
Mayor of Montego Bay Councillor Glendon Harris attributed most of the flooding that affected the city, especially on Dome Street, to the clogging of silt traps by garbage. "The garbage [has been] blocking silt traps, therefore the water can’t run off as it is supposed to, so you get a build-up (of flood water) with the persistent, heavy rain,” Harris said.
Officers from the parish council, he said, went into the town after the rain to determine work that needs to be done to prevent further flooding.

CALAIS, Maine (AP) — A young man who was drinking and celebrating the Fourth of July tried to launch a firework off the top of his head, fatally injuring himself, authorities said Sunday. Devon Staples and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in the backyard of a friend's home in the small eastern Maine city of Calais, said Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. Staples, 22, of Calais, placed a fireworks mortar tube on his head and set it off, he said. The firework exploded, killing Staples instantly, McCausland said. His death is the first fireworks fatality in Maine since the state legalized fireworks on Jan. 1, 2012, authorities said. Calais is on the Canadian border near New Brunswick. HORACE HINES Observer West reporter  Thursday, July 30, 2015     MONTEGO BAY, St James — HIGGLERS across St James will now be banned from selling outside school gates come September as the parish council and police move to make these areas no-vending zone. Stalls at the gate of the Maldon High School in St James Mayor of Montego Bay Glendon Harris made the announcement yesterday: "We are to have a meeting with the vendors to remove the stalls. No vending at the school gate in the prescribed distance. We are going to be dealing with all the schools in the parish. Remember, we did Corinaldi Primary already and we did Anchovy High," Harris said. The fatal stabbing of 15-year-old Maldon High School student Romario Salmon, by a group of knife-wielding students, factored into the decision to prohibit vending at school gates.
